How is a round robin schedule made?

The circle method fixes one team and rotates the others one place each round, pairing the team at the top of the circle with the one at the bottom. With n teams (n even) that gives n − 1 rounds of n/2 games, and every pair meets exactly once. When n is odd, a dummy team is added so the schedule is built for n + 1; whoever is paired with the dummy has a bye that round, giving n rounds of (n − 1)/2 games. FIDE's Berger tables use the same idea: with an odd number of players, the highest number counts as a bye.

Worked example. Five teams A to E: the generator adds a dummy, builds 5 rounds with 2 games each, and each team sits out exactly one round. Total games are 5 × 4 / 2 = 10. For a double round robin the games double to 20 and the number of rounds doubles to 10.

What it does not do. It does not balance home and away, venues, travel or team availability. If those matter, use the pairings as a starting point and swap whole rounds, not single games, so each team still plays once per round.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a round robin schedule?

Use the circle method: fix one team, rotate the rest one place each round, and pair the top of the circle with the bottom. Paste your teams above and the tool does it for you. With an odd number of teams one team has a bye each round.

How many rounds are in a round robin?

n − 1 rounds if the number of teams n is even, and n rounds if n is odd, for a single round robin. A double round robin doubles that.

What is a bye in a round robin?

A round in which a team does not play because the number of teams is odd. The usual construction adds a dummy team, and whoever is scheduled against the dummy has the bye.

Does it assign home and away?

No. The first-listed team in a pairing is not a home team. In a double round robin the second half reverses the order of each pairing, which you can use as the return fixture.

Wikipedia describes the circle method (fix one competitor, rotate the others) and the dummy competitor for odd fields; FIDE Handbook C.05 Annex 1 states that with an odd number of players the highest number counts as a bye. The tests check that every pair meets exactly once per meeting for 2 to 15 teams. Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent or stored.
