How to make a WiFi QR code

  1. Type the network name (SSID) exactly as it appears on a device, including capital letters and spaces.
  2. Type the password and choose the security type. WPA covers WPA and WPA2 personal networks; choose WEP for old routers and None for an open network.
  3. Tick Hidden network only if the router does not broadcast its name.
  4. Download SVG or PNG, print it, and test-scan it with a phone that is not already on the network.

What is inside a WiFi QR code

The code is plain text in a format described on the ZXing project wiki: WIFI:T:WPA;S:name;P:password;;. T is the security type (WEP, WPA or nopass), S the network name, P the password and H:true marks a hidden network. The characters backslash, semicolon, comma, double quote and colon have special meaning and are escaped with a backslash. This generator does that for you.

Worked example

A network called Cafe;Guest with the password p"ss:word and WPA security produces this text, with the semicolon, quote and colon escaped:

WIFI:T:WPA;S:Cafe\;Guest;P:p\"ss\:word;;

WiFi QR Code Generator FAQ

How do I make a WiFi QR code?

Enter the network name and password, pick the security type and download the code. Guests scan it with their phone camera and are offered the chance to join. Nothing is uploaded: the code is built in your browser.

Is it safe to put my WiFi password in a QR code?

The password is stored in the code as readable text, so anyone who can scan or photograph the code can get it. That is no different from writing the password on a card. Put it somewhere only guests can see it, or share a separate guest network.

What if my WiFi name or password has special characters?

The characters \ ; , " and : are escaped with a backslash, as the ZXing WIFI: format requires, so names and passwords containing them still scan correctly.

Does a WiFi QR code expire?

No. It is a static code with the details written into it. It only stops working if you change the network name, password or security type.

Which error-correction level should I choose?

Denso Wave, the inventor of the QR code, lists four levels that can restore about 7% (L), 15% (M), 25% (Q) or 30% (H) of the code, and notes that M is the most frequently selected. Higher levels make a denser code, so use Q or H for printed codes that may get dirty or damaged, or when you place a logo over the centre, and L for clean screens and short data.
