Poster tiling calculator.
How many sheets you need to print a big poster or banner on a normal printer, and how they line up.
Inputs
Sheets
Enter the poster size.
How many A4 sheets make an A0 poster?
An A0 poster (841 x 1189 mm) has 16 times the area of A4, but a 4 x 4 grid of A4 sheets is 840 x 1188 mm, 1 mm short each way, so with no margin and no overlap the tool counts 18 sheets (landscape, 3 across and 6 down). In practice printers cannot print to the edge and you need some overlap to tape or glue the pieces. With a 5 mm unprintable margin on every edge and 10 mm of overlap, A0 needs 21 A4 sheets laid landscape (3 across, 7 down).
The number of sheets in one direction is the smallest n for which n x (printable length - overlap) + overlap reaches the poster length. The tool tries the sheet portrait and landscape and keeps whichever uses fewer sheets.
Frequently asked questions
How many A4 sheets for an A1 poster?
An A1 poster (594 x 841 mm) takes 9 A4 sheets (3 x 3) with no margin or overlap, and 12 sheets (4 across, 3 down) with a 5 mm printer margin and 10 mm overlap. A1 is 8 times the area of A4, but the sheets do not tile it with no waste.
How many A4 pages make an A3 poster?
Two with no margin or overlap (A3 is exactly two A4 sheets side by side). With a 5 mm printer margin and 10 mm overlap the tool gives 4.
What overlap should I use?
Whatever lets you tape or glue neatly; 10 mm is a common choice. Set 0 for butt joints.
What margin should I enter?
Your printer's unprintable edge. It is in the printer specifications; many printers need around 3 to 6 mm.
Does this scale the poster?
No. The poster prints at the size you enter, split over sheets. To scale the artwork use the A4 to Letter converter or your print dialog.

Scope
Sizes and results are arithmetic on published paper sizes and the numbers you enter. Printers and print shops set their own sizes, margins, bleed and resolution requirements, so confirm with yours before you print.
