What this calculator does
A monster's XP depends only on its challenge rating, and the SRD prints the full table from CR 0 at 0 or 10 XP up to CR 30 at 155,000 XP. The steps are not even: CR 5 is worth 1,800 XP and CR 6 is worth 2,300, while CR 20 jumps to 25,000. Adding a mixed encounter by hand means looking each one up, which is what this calculator does for you.
This is the awarded-XP side only. It adds up what the monsters are worth and divides by the number of characters. It does not judge difficulty: the Dungeon Master's Guide applies an encounter multiplier for how many monsters there are when it rates an encounter, and that multiplier is not part of the XP the party earns, so it is deliberately left out here.
Worked example
The party of four beat four CR 1/2 monsters and one CR 3 monster. CR 1/2 is 100 XP each, so four of them are 400 XP. CR 3 is 700 XP. The total is 1,100 XP, and split four ways each character earns 275 XP. A character at 1,000 XP would be at 1,275, still short of the 2,700 XP needed for 4th level.
How it is calculated
Each challenge rating is looked up in the SRD 5.1 table: CR 0 = 0 (or 10), 1/8 = 25, 1/4 = 50, 1/2 = 100, 1 = 200, 2 = 450, 3 = 700, 4 = 1,100, 5 = 1,800, up to 30 = 155,000. A count multiplies the entry. The total is the sum, and the per-character share is the total divided by the number of characters, shown without rounding because XP can be split in fractions at some tables. Decimals 0.125, 0.25 and 0.5 are accepted as 1/8, 1/4 and 1/2.

What this does not cover
- Encounter difficulty, XP thresholds and the multiplier for number of monsters are not calculated.
- Milestone leveling does not use XP at all; this tool is for tables that award XP.
- Non-monster XP awards for quests or roleplay are whatever you add yourself.
- Values are SRD 5.1. Monster stat blocks outside the SRD should list their own XP.
Common mix-ups
-
Often assumedEach step up in challenge rating doubles the XP.
What the source saysThe SRD table is not a doubling: CR 1 is 200 XP, CR 2 is 450, CR 3 is 700 and CR 4 is 1,100, and the gaps keep changing up to 155,000 XP at CR 30. [1]
-
Often assumedA CR 0 monster is never worth any XP.
What the source saysThe SRD lists the XP for challenge 0 as "0 or 10", so a creature at that rating may be worth 10 XP. [1]

Frequently asked questions
How much XP is a CR 1 monster worth in 5e?
Two hundred XP. The SRD table runs CR 1/8 = 25, 1/4 = 50, 1/2 = 100, 1 = 200, 2 = 450 and 3 = 700.
How much XP is CR 0 worth?
The SRD lists CR 0 as 0 or 10 XP, depending on the creature. Tick the box to count it as 10 XP, or leave it off to count 0.
How much XP is the highest challenge rating?
Challenge 30 is worth 155,000 XP in the SRD table, more than the 120,000 XP a character needs for 13th level.
Is the XP split between characters?
Most tables divide the total evenly among the characters who took part. The tool shows both the total and the per-character share so you can decide.
Does this include the encounter multiplier?
No. The multiplier in the Dungeon Master's Guide is used to rate how hard an encounter is, not to decide what XP the party earns, so the total here is the plain sum of the table values.
