Filing date versus payment date
CRA lists two filing dates for personal income tax returns. Most people file by April 30 of the year after the tax year. If you or your spouse or common-law partner carried on a business in the year, the filing date is June 15. The date you must pay any balance owing is still April 30, even when you have until June 15 to file, so interest on a balance starts the day after April 30.
When a date falls on a Saturday or Sunday, this page moves it to the next business day, the usual CRA treatment for due dates. April 30 and June 15 are never federal statutory holidays, so only weekends move them. In 2028, for example, April 30 is a Sunday, so the tax year 2027 deadline shows as Monday, May 1, 2028.
Filing on time avoids the late-filing penalty even if you cannot pay in full, but interest still accrues on what you owe. Use the late-filing penalty calculator and the interest calculator to see the cost of missing a date.

When is the tax filing deadline in Canada for 2027?
For the 2026 tax year, most individuals must file by April 30, 2027. Self-employed individuals, and people whose spouse or common-law partner is self-employed, have until June 15, 2027 to file.
If I am self-employed, when do I have to pay?

What if April 30 falls on a weekend?
The due date moves to the next business day. April 30, 2027 is a Friday, so it does not move.

The April 30, 2027 date for people who are not self-employed applies CRA’s recurring rule to the 2026 tax year. Self-employed people whose expenses are mainly tax shelter investments file by April 30. Confirm your dates in CRA My Account.
