International · Validation

Malaysia NRIC (MyKad) validator.

Check a 12-digit Malaysian NRIC (MyKad) number: the birth date, the place-of-birth code and the last digit. Runs in your browser. Format only, so it cannot say whether the number was issued.

How it works: the layout is YYMMDD-PB-###G. The first six digits must be a real date, digits 7 and 8 must be a place code from the National Registration Department (JPN) lists, and the century is not stored so both are shown.

Format only; not an official register lookupSources checked October 2026

How a Malaysian NRIC number is built

The 12 digits
DigitsMeaning
1-6Date of birth, YYMMDD
7-8Place-of-birth code (01-16 for the states and federal territories, further codes 21-59 for the same states, 60 and up for births outside Malaysia)
9-11Serial number
12Last digit, commonly reported as odd for males and even for females

The year has two digits only, so 630916 could be 1963 or 2063. The tool drops any future date and shows what remains.

Format only, not verification

JPN publishes the place-of-birth code lists. It does not publish a check digit, so a passing number may still not exist. Nothing is looked up. Treat an NRIC as personal data and prefer sample numbers when testing.

Confirm it with the issuer

To check that a number really exists, use the official service: National Registration Department Malaysia (JPN). This page never contacts it and does not pass your number to it.

Sources

State code table read from the JPN Kod Negeri page on 2026-10-16 (archived copy). The odd/even gender digit is widely reported but was not stated on the JPN pages we read.

Frequently asked questions

What do the digits in a Malaysian IC number mean?

Six digits of birth date, two digits of place-of-birth code, three serial digits and one final digit.

How do I find the birth state from an NRIC?

Read digits 7 and 8 and match them to the JPN state code list. 01 is Johor, 14 is Kuala Lumpur, 12 is Sabah, for example.

Is there a checksum on MyKad numbers?

No public check digit is published, so only structure and date are checked.

Format only — not a registry lookup

This tool checks the number entirely in your browser. It does not query any government register and does not imply official verification. A matching pattern is not proof that the number was ever issued or belongs to anyone. An ID number is personal data: nothing you type is transmitted, stored or logged, but use a sample number where you can.
