Worked example
Tattoo on Thursday, October 1, 2026, with two care sessions a day. End of week one is Oct 8 (14 wash-and-moisturize sessions so far); end of week two Oct 15; about three weeks Oct 22; end of week four Oct 29 (56 sessions in all, 28 days × 2); and about two months Nov 26, when the top layer of skin should typically be healed.
How it works
Cleveland Clinic's dermatologist guidance: the artist applies ointment and a clear bandage, which stays on at least three hours or more depending on size. Through the first week, wash gently with mild fragrance-free soap and warm water twice a day, pat dry, and moisturize twice a day. In weeks two to four, keep washing and moisturizing, expect itching, flaking and some scabs, and do not pick or scratch. After about three weeks the scabs should be healing with less flakiness. At about two months the top layer of skin is typically healed, but the lower layers can take several more months. Larger tattoos can take a few months to fully heal and may stay red or swollen longer.
Until fully healed it advises avoiding tight clothing, exfoliating, petroleum jelly, applying sunscreen to the area, and soaking it in hot tubs, baths or pools. See a doctor for fever, skin that feels hot, odour or significant drainage, pain that increases, or red streaks or spreading redness. Cleveland Clinic says to wash gently twice a day with mild, fragrance-free soap and warm water, pat dry, and moisturize twice a day, continuing through weeks two to four.
