Worked example

Event on Saturday, November 14, 2026. Colour can keep developing for up to 72 hours, so apply no later than three days before: Nov 11. A tan lasts about 5 to 10 days, so apply no earlier than five days before to be sure it has not started to fade: Nov 9. The window is Nov 9 to Nov 11. For a tan applied Oct 10: fully developed by Oct 13, and it should fade between Oct 15 and Oct 20.

How it works

Cleveland Clinic says the active ingredient in spray tans and other sunless tanners is DHA (dihydroxyacetone), which reacts with proteins in the outermost layer of skin. Colour starts about two to four hours after application and can keep developing for as much as 24 to 72 hours. Because the outer skin cells are replaced roughly weekly, the tan goes when they shed, which is why a spray tan lasts about five to 10 days. The planner applies those ranges to both spray tans and home self-tanners; a product label that says otherwise wins.

Event window = event date minus 5 days (earliest) to minus 3 days (latest). Fade window = application date plus 5 to plus 10 days.

Safety. The same page says no tan, however dark, protects from sunburn, and it is not a base tan. It also says the FDA has approved DHA for external use but not for commercial spray booths, because there is no data on inhaling or ingesting the spray or getting it in the eyes, nose, mouth or lips.

FAQ

How long does a self tan or spray tan last?

Cleveland Clinic says a spray tan lasts about five to 10 days, because the outer skin cells that hold the colour are replaced roughly weekly. The planner uses 5 to 10 days; check your product label.

How long does a spray tan take to develop?

Cleveland Clinic says colour begins two to four hours after DHA is applied and can continue for as much as 24 to 72 hours, so the planner treats three days as fully developed.

When should I get a spray tan before an event?

Apply no later than three days before, so it has finished developing, and no earlier than about five days before, so it has not started to fade. For a Saturday event that is the Monday to Wednesday before.

Does a self tan protect me from the sun?

No. Cleveland Clinic says no matter how dark a spray tan is, it does not provide protection from sunburn and is not a base tan. Use sunscreen as you normally would.

Is spray tanning safe?

DHA is approved by the FDA for external use, but Cleveland Clinic says it is not approved for commercial spray booths, since inhaling or ingesting the spray or getting it in the eyes, nose, mouth or lips has not been shown to be safe. Keep it away from those areas.
