Worked example

First install on 2 November 2026, worn 8 weeks, then 2 rest weeks, 3 installs. Install 1 comes down on 28 December 2026 and install 2 starts on 11 January 2027. Install 2 comes down on 8 March 2027 and install 3 starts on 22 March 2027, coming down on 17 May 2027. The last rest week ends on 31 May 2027. In 30 weeks you wear a style for 24 and rest for 6, so 80% of the time is wear.

How it works

Takedown date = install date + weeks worn x 7 days. Next install date = takedown date + rest weeks x 7 days. The wear share is weeks worn / (weeks worn + rest weeks). All dates are calendar dates computed in UTC, so daylight saving does not shift them.

The tool does not decide how long a rest should be. It flags more than 10 weeks as beyond the 8 to 10 weeks a stylist recommends below, and more than 12 weeks as longer than the outer limit reported below.

Sources and basis

Checked 2026-10-15. Curl Centric: How Much Is a Sew-In? Install and Hair Costs, Piece by Piece says a sew-in can last six to eight weeks, that some people wear one up to 12 weeks (the outer limit, not the goal), and reports the American Academy of Dermatology advising two or three months at most. A stylist interviewed by Textured Talk: How to Transition With Weave..The RIGHT Way says extensions may stay intact after 2 months but should be removed in 8 to 10 weeks. The rest-week length is your choice; we found no published standard. Calculation: date arithmetic on the figures you enter.

Not medical or professional advice. If a style is pulling, painful or causing hair loss, take it down and see a professional.

FAQ

How long should I wait between sew-ins?

We found no published standard for the gap. Rest weeks are your choice, and this tool lets you pick any number from 0 to 26. Ask your stylist how long your hair needs.

How long can a sew-in stay in?

Curl Centric says six to eight weeks, with 12 weeks as the outer limit, and reports the American Academy of Dermatology advising two or three months at most. A stylist interviewed by Textured Talk recommends removal at 8 to 10 weeks.

How do I plan takedown and reinstall dates?

Add the weeks worn to the install date for the takedown, then add the rest weeks to get the next install. This tool repeats that for up to 12 installs.

Does the plan account for holidays or appointments?

No. It gives calendar dates only, so shift any date to a day your stylist has open.
