Worked example

A 32 in waist is US and UK 32. EU/IT size is 32 + 16 = 48. In centimetres 32 x 2.54 = 81.3 cm, and it sits in the medium (M) band. A 34 in tape measurement is size 34, and 33.2 in rounds up to the next tag size, 34.

How it works

US and UK men's pants sizes are the waist in inches. The calculator rounds a measurement up to the next available tag size: every inch up to 40, then every 2 inches. EU/IT size = US waist + 16 (30 is 46, 32 is 48, 34 is 50). Centimetres = inches x 2.54 exactly.

Letter sizes follow the common retail bands: S for waists up to 30, M 31 to 34, L 35 to 38, XL 39 to 42 and XXL above. Brands set their own bands.

Tag size is not a tape measurement. Vanity sizing means a tag marked 34 often measures 35 to 36 in at the waistband, and stretch denim cuts differ again. Use the brand's own garment measurements when they are listed.
