Worked example

Pants size 34 gives 34 + 2 = belt 36. A belt has about five holes 1 inch apart, so with the centre hole at 36 it fits waists from 32 to 36, and sits best at 34. In centimetres 36 x 2.54 = 91.4 cm, which rounds to the nearest 5 as EU 90.

How it works

Belt size is measured from the fold where the buckle attaches to the centre hole, and by convention is the pants size plus 2 inches, so the belt closes at the centre hole on trousers of the smaller size. Belts are made in even sizes, so an odd result rounds up (33 gives 36).

Belt you already own: measure from the fold at the buckle to the hole you wear it on. That length is the belt size, and the pants it fits are 2 in smaller.

EU belt sizes are the same length in centimetres, in steps of 5 cm (85, 90, 95, 100). This applies to dress and casual belts. Work, gun and fashion belts follow their own charts, so use the maker's guide.
