Worked example
A 15 cm foot plus 1 cm of growing room needs a shoe about 16 cm long. That is 6.30 in, and the scale gives (6.30 - 3.75) x 3 = 7.65, rounded up to the next half size, which is US 8C. A size 8C is built for a 16.3 cm foot, so it leaves about 1.3 cm in total. UK is 7.5 and EU is (16.3 + 0.5) x 1.5 = 25.2, shown as 25.
How it works
US kids sizes run on one scale, newborn 0 up to 13C (little kid), then restart at 1Y (youth) and run to 6Y. Each whole size is one third of an inch, about 0.85 cm, so foot length in inches = 3.75 + size / 3, counting youth size 1 as size 14. The calculator adds 1 cm of growing room to the foot, converts to inches and rounds up to the next half size.
UK is the US size minus 0.5 up to 1Y, then the UK scale restarts at 1 (so US 2Y is UK 1.5), as on major brand charts. EU uses Paris points: (foot length in cm + 0.5) x 1.5, to the nearest half size.
Limits. Brands cut lasts differently, so the same foot can be a half size apart between makers. Check a brand's own chart when it lists foot lengths. For feet over 25 cm use the adult shoe converter.
Sources and basis (checked 2026-10-05):
- Size step of 1/3 inch: the US barleycorn shoe scale used by the Brannock device; the 3.75 in start for size 0 matches the common newborn size 0 length of about 9.5 cm. Checked 2026-10-05.
- UK and EU steps follow the conversions published on mainstream kids' shoe charts (for example Nike's kids sizing chart). The EU formula is the standard Paris point of 2/3 cm.
FAQ
How do I measure my child's foot for a shoe size?
Stand the child on paper, mark the back of the heel and the tip of the longest toe, and measure between the marks. Do both feet, in the evening when feet are largest, and use the longer one.
How much room should kids' shoes have?
Fitters commonly advise about a thumb's width, roughly 0.5 to 1.25 cm, between the longest toe and the end of the shoe. This page adds 1 cm.
What foot length is a size 13C?
About 20.5 cm (8.08 in) on this scale, with 13.5C at 21.0 cm and 1Y at 21.4 cm.
Is a US toddler size the same as UK?
No. Up to 1Y the UK size is half a size lower, then the UK scale restarts, so US 2Y is UK 1.5.
Do kids' shoe sizes vary by brand?
Yes, often by half a size. Use the brand's chart when it lists foot length in cm.
