Worked example

A child is 120 cm tall. The nearest 6 cm height size is 122 (56 + 11 x 6 = 122), which suits about 119 to 125 cm; the next size up is 128 for growth room. The blended CDC/WHO median height passes 120 cm at about 6.7 years, so the closest US size is 7. For a 14 cm foot, the last length is 1.08 x 140 + 6 = 157.2 mm, giving EU 24, UK 6.5 and US 7.

How it is calculated

EU/UK size. Height-based sizing (EN 13402, in the ISO 3635 lineage) uses body height in centimetres as the size. Common kids' sizes step by 6 cm from 56 to 176 (56, 62, 68 ... 140, 146, 152). The tool picks the nearest size to the height entered (halfway rounds up), and also shows the next size up. Reading a size as N minus 3 to N plus 3 cm comes from the 6 cm step; it is not a published fit range, and brands cut differently.

Typical age. We read the 50th-percentile (median) height curves: WHO Child Growth Standards for 0 to 5 years and CDC stature-for-age for 5 years and up, boys and girls averaged unless you pick one, interpolated linearly. The two sources differ by about 1 cm at age 5. The typical age for a size is the age the median passes the bottom of its band to the age it passes the top. In age mode, the result is the median height and the 3rd to 97th percentile range for that age.

US size. US sizes are labelled roughly by age. Under 24 months the baby sizes by months are used (0-3M ... 18-24M, as named in 16 CFR 1615); from 2 years, the size is the nearest whole year of the child's age (2T, 3T, 4T, 5T, then 5 to 14). In height mode the age comes from the blended median curve. There is no public federal height chart for US sizes; the CPSC rules list size names only.

Shoe size. From the foot length: last length = 1.08 x foot + 6 mm (the children's allowance in ISO/TS 19407). EU = last in cm x 1.5 (Paris point, 2/3 cm). UK child = 3 x last in inches - 12 (barleycorn, 1/3 inch, child size 0 = 4 in). US child = 3 x last in inches - 11.75. UK and US are rounded to the nearest half size, EU to the nearest whole size. US brands often offset by half a size or more, so check the brand chart.

Sources and as-of date. Height data: CDC stature-for-age percentile data (2 to 20 years) (CDC growth charts) and WHO Child Growth Standards, length/height-for-age (0 to 5 years). Size designation: the EN 13402 series (ISO 3635 lineage) uses body height in centimetres as the primary dimension for children's clothing. US size names: 16 CFR 1615 and 16 CFR 1616 (CPSC sleepwear rules list sizes 9-12 months up to 14, but give no height chart). Shoe sizing: ISO/TS 19407:2023. Data files read on 2026-10-02.

Limits. This describes typical growth. It is not a medical assessment, is not meant to tell whether a child's growth is normal, and is not a fit guarantee. Brands run small or large and children grow, so size up one bracket for growth room. Talk to your child's doctor about growth concerns.

Frequently asked questions

What age is size 140 in kids UK clothes?

Size 140 is a height size for a child about 140 cm (4 ft 7 in) tall. By CDC and WHO median heights that is typically 9.7 years to 10.9 years. See the full size 140 age guide. Brands print their own age labels, which can differ, so go by height.

What does the number in a kids clothing size mean?

In EU and UK height-based sizing the number is the body height in centimetres the garment is cut for (the EN 13402 primary dimension for children). Sizes step by 6 cm, so 98, 104, 110 and so on. US sizes (2T to 14) are labelled roughly by age in years instead.

Should I size up for growth?

Usually one bracket, yes. Brands run small or large and children grow, roughly 5 to 7 cm a year between ages 4 and 10. Buy the size that matches the height now if you need a close fit, or the next size up for room to grow. The calculator shows both.

How do US kids sizes compare to EU/UK sizes?

US sizes (2T, 3T, 4T, 5T, then 4 to 14) are named for age, and there is no single public height chart behind them. This tool finds the age at which the CDC/WHO median height matches your child's height and gives the US size nearest that age. It is an estimate; check the brand's chart.

Why does a brand's size chart disagree with this?

Each brand grades its own sizes and age labels, and cuts run slim or generous. The growth data here describes typical children, not any one brand's fit. When a chart and the tool disagree, trust the brand chart for that brand and use the tool as a sanity check.

How do I measure my child's height and foot?

Stand the child barefoot against a wall, heels and back touching it, head level; mark the top of the head with a flat book and measure from the floor in centimetres. For the foot, stand on a sheet of paper against a wall, mark the longest toe, and measure from the wall to the mark. Measure in the afternoon, when feet are largest.
