Worked example
Start at $1 and add $1 each week, ascending. Week 1 is $1, week 2 is $2 and week 52 is $52. The total is $1,378.00, which is 52 x 53 / 2 x $1. Start at $5 and add $5 and the total is $6,890.00. Start at $0.50 and add $0.50 and it is $689.00. The same $1 plan over 26 weeks totals $351.00. Descending gives the same $1,378.00, only the first deposit is $52.00 instead of $1.
How it works
deposit in week w = first deposit + (w - 1) x weekly increase. The total is the sum of all weeks. Descending lists the same amounts backwards. Random shuffles them with a fixed-seed shuffle so the same shuffle number always gives the same order. The monthly figure is the total divided by the weeks, times 52.1775 weeks a year, divided by 12.
Total amount does not depend on order, only on the first deposit, the increase and the number of weeks. Order changes when the large deposits land. Nothing is invested or earns interest here; for that use the savings goal calculator.

FAQ
What is the 52 week savings challenge?
You save a set amount each week and raise it every week. In the classic version you save $1 in week 1, $2 in week 2 and so on up to $52 in week 52.
How much do you save in the 52 week challenge?
With a $1 start and $1 weekly increase you save $1,378.00 over 52 weeks. The total is the first deposit x 52 plus the increase x 1,326.
Should I do ascending or descending?
The total is the same. Ascending is easier at the start; descending front-loads the big deposits so the later weeks are lighter, which helps if you expect your motivation or budget to fade.
What does the random order do?
It shuffles the same weekly amounts so you do not know which amount is next. Change the shuffle number to get a different order.
What if the later weeks are too expensive?
Lower the increase. Starting at $0.50 and adding $0.50 each week totals $689.00, and a 26 week plan at $1 totals $351.00.
