Understanding waist-to-hip ratio
Waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) is your waist circumference divided by your hip circumference. Unlike BMI, it specifically flags abdominal ("apple-shaped") fat distribution, which carries a higher cardiovascular and metabolic risk than fat carried on the hips and thighs.
Formula
- WHR = waist circumference ÷ hip circumference
WHO risk thresholds
- Men: WHR above 0.90 indicates abdominal obesity and substantially increased health risk.
- Women: WHR above 0.85 indicates abdominal obesity and substantially increased health risk.
