How much data does streaming use?

Netflix publishes per-hour usage ceilings for each quality setting: up to 0.3 GB an hour at Low, 0.7 GB at Medium, 1 GB for standard definition, 3 GB for high definition and 7 GB for Ultra HD. They are maximums per device, so real use is often lower. Streaming data is hours per day times days times GB per hour; add everything else you use (downloads, updates, video calls) and compare with your cap. Other services use different amounts, so edit the quality and other-usage boxes to match your own figures.

Worked example. A 1,250 GB cap (1.25 TB), 4 hours of HD a day for 30 days is 4 x 30 x 3 = 360 GB. With 200 GB of other use the total is 560 GB, 44.8 percent of the cap, leaving 690 GB. You could stream up to 350 hours of HD in the month after the other use, about 11.7 hours a day.

Frequently asked questions

How much data does Netflix use per hour?

Netflix lists up to 0.3 GB at Low, 0.7 GB at Medium, 1 GB standard definition, 3 GB high definition and 7 GB Ultra HD per hour per device.

Do the numbers apply to YouTube or other services?

No. The quality choices use Netflix's published maximums. For another service, use its own figure or a measured one; this page does not claim other services' rates.

How do I check my real usage?

Your router, ISP account page or device settings often show monthly totals, which are more reliable than estimates.

Does the cap count uploads?

It depends on your provider. Check your plan terms; the tool adds whatever you enter in other usage.
