Worked example

Fixed van costs are $1,100 + $350 + $250 + $200 = $1,900 a month. Driving 80 km a day for 20 days at $0.18 a km is $288 of fuel. At 5 grooms a day that is 100 grooms a month, so the van costs ($1,900 + $288) / 100 = $21.88 per groom. Add $6 of supplies for a cost of $27.88. To keep $60 profit per groom, the price is $87.88, which leaves $6,000 a month.

How it works

Van cost per groom = (fixed monthly costs + days x km x fuel per km) / (days x grooms per day). Supplies are added per groom. The suggested price is the cost per groom plus the profit you enter.

The profit you enter is the money left for your own pay, business tax and any costs not listed here, such as software, advertising, tools or your phone. Add those to the monthly figures if you want the price to cover them.

Fewer grooms per day spreads the same van costs over fewer dogs. Try 4 instead of 5 to see how sensitive the price is.

FAQ

What costs does a mobile groomer have that a salon does not?

The vehicle (payment, insurance, repairs), fuel, and water and power for the van. A salon has rent instead. Enter whichever applies to you.

Does this include my pay?

No. The target profit per groom is where your pay sits. Set it to the amount you want to take home per dog before tax.

Why is fuel per km, not per trip?

Different routes vary. Multiply your typical daily distance by your fuel cost per km, and update it when you change areas.
