Resin 3D print cost.

Resin slicers report the volume of a print in mL, supports included. Add what the bottle cost, the wash liquid and the gloves and paper towel, and see what one print really costs.

Cost = (print mL / bottle mL x bottle price + wash share + consumables + power), divided by (1 - failure rate). 60 mL from a $40.00 litre bottle is $2.40 of resin; with wash, consumables and an 8% failure allowance the print costs $3.31.

Print and prices

$
What you paid for the bottle.
mL
Resin is sold by weight or volume. If your bottle lists only grams, divide by the density on the resin data sheet to get mL.
mL
From your slicer, including supports and raft.
mL
Isopropyl alcohol, water-washable cleaner or similar.
$/L
prints
How many prints you wash before replacing the liquid.
$
Gloves, paper towel, filters and the share of FEP or vat wear you want to count.
h
W
Average draw over the print, including the UV light. Add curing separately if you want it counted.
$/kWh
%
Share of prints you scrap. Spreads the loss across the good ones. Use 0 to ignore.

Worked example

A print is 60 mL in the slicer. The bottle is 1,000 mL for $40.00, so resin is 60 / 1,000 x $40.00 = $2.40. Using 100 mL of $12.00/L wash liquid that is replaced every 10 prints adds 0.1 x $12.00 / 10 = $0.12. Consumables are $0.50 and 3 h at 50 W and $0.15 per kWh is $0.02. The subtotal is $3.04; with an 8% failure allowance the cost is $3.04 / 0.92 = $3.31, about 5.5 cents per mL.

How it works

Resin cost is the share of the bottle the print uses times what the bottle cost. The wash liquid is divided over the number of prints before you replace it. The failure allowance reflects that if 8 prints in every 100 are scrapped, the 92 good prints must also pay for the 8 wasted ones, so cost per good print is the subtotal divided by (1 - 0.08).

Not included. Printer purchase, FEP film or LCD replacement unless you add it to consumables, post-curing electricity, your time and shipping. Handle uncured resin and wash liquid following your resin maker's safety data sheet.

FAQ

How much does a resin 3D print cost?

It depends on the bottle price and the print volume. At 40 dollars per litre, each 10 mL of resin costs 40 cents, so a 60 mL print is 2.40 dollars before wash liquid, consumables and failures.

Where do I find the print volume?

Resin slicers report the volume of resin a job uses in mL. Use the figure that includes supports and any raft.

My resin is priced by weight. What do I enter?

Enter the bottle size in mL. If only grams are listed, divide grams by the resin density from its data sheet. The result is an estimate; keep one bottle as a check against your slicer.

Should wash liquid be included?

Yes if you sell prints or want a real number. Divide what a fill costs by the prints you wash before replacing it; this calculator does that from the mL per print and prints per fill.

Is resin printing safe to do at home?

Follow your resin maker's safety data sheet for gloves, ventilation and disposal. This calculator only estimates cost and is not safety advice.
