How the itch.io fees are worked out

Revenue share. The itch.io payments guide describes a default revenue share of 10% that the creator can set anywhere from 0% to 100%. You choose it, so pick the percentage you set on your project page.

Payment processor. The same page states that PayPal and Stripe each charge $0.30 + 2.9% per transaction, whether you use payouts or direct payments. The calculator charges both parts on every sale. Because the $0.30 is fixed, small prices lose a larger share: the guide recommends a minimum price of about $2 for that reason.

Quantity. If you enter several sales at the same price, the fixed $0.30 is charged once per sale, since each one is its own transaction.

Break-even price. The calculator searches one cent at a time for the lowest price where your payout covers your cost per sale.

Worked example

A $10 sale at the default 10% share: share $1.00, processor $0.59, payout $8.41. Ten sales at $2 each: share $2.00, processor $3.58, payout $14.42 (27.9% effective), which shows how the fixed fee weighs on low prices.

Frequently asked questions

How much does itch.io take?

By default itch.io takes a 10% revenue share, which the creator can set from 0% to 100%. The payment processor (PayPal or Stripe) separately charges 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction, per the itch.io payments documentation.

Can I set itch.io's revenue share to 0%?

The documentation says creators can choose from 0% to 100%. Payment processor fees still apply.

What is the minimum payout on itch.io?

The docs say you need at least $5.00 available to request a payout.

Why are low prices expensive on itch.io?

The processor adds a fixed $0.30 per transaction, so a $2 sale loses far more than 2.9% to it. The guide recommends selling at $2 or more.

Does this include tax or refunds?

No. It models only the revenue share and processor fee you enter, so refunds, chargebacks and taxes are outside it.
