Worked example

20 trip days at $75 earn $1,500.00. A 25% platform share takes $375.00, leaving $1,125.00. Depreciation is ($25,000 - $19,000) / 365 = $16.44 per calendar day, $500.00 a month because the car loses value on idle days too. Add $60 protection, $120.00 of trip-day costs ($6 x 20) and $150 other costs for $830.00 of total costs. Profit is $295.00 a month, $14.75 per trip day and $3,540.00 a year. Fixed costs are covered at 14.1 trip days a month.

How it works

Depreciation per day = (value today - later value) / (years x 365), charged on every calendar day (30.42 a month), not only trip days. Break-even trip days = (protection + depreciation + other fixed) / (daily rate x (1 - share) - cost per trip day).

Platform shares, protection plans, fees and rules differ by platform, country and plan, and they change. Enter the figures from your own host account and policy; none is assumed. Not included: income tax, commercial insurance requirements, damage outside protection, loan interest beyond what you enter, and local rules on renting out a vehicle. This is arithmetic, not insurance, tax or legal advice.

Sources and basis: Basis (opened 2026-10-08): arithmetic on the rates, shares and costs you enter. No platform share, insurance price or vehicle value is assumed or quoted.

Local short-term rental licensing, zoning and tax rules vary, so check your municipality. This is arithmetic on the numbers you enter, not tax or legal advice.

FAQ

How much can you make on Turo?

It depends on the vehicle, market, daily rate, how many days it is booked and the costs. Enter yours: the example nets $295.00 a month.

Why count depreciation on days the car is not rented?

A vehicle loses value with time and use whether or not it is booked. Charging depreciation on every calendar day shows the true cost of owning it as a rental.

What platform share should I enter?

The percentage your platform takes at the protection level you chose, as shown in your host account. It varies by plan and changes over time.

Is this a Turo-only tool?

No. It works for any peer-to-peer car sharing where you earn a daily rate and the platform keeps a percentage.
