Answer
States with no income tax (2026)
Eight states levy no individual income tax on wages: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas and Wyoming. Washington does not tax wages either, but it taxes capital gains of high earners (7% up to $1 million and 9% above, per the Tax Foundation table). Select any state above to see how it taxes wages.
No income tax does not mean no tax. The table compares the other two big state-level taxes for the no-income-tax states. Sales taxes are state plus average local rates (July 2026); property taxes are effective rates, meaning median property tax paid divided by median home value (2024 data).
| State | Combined sales tax (avg.) | Effective property tax rate | Property tax rank (1 = highest) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alaska | 1.82% | 0.94% | #20 |
| Florida | 6.98% | 0.78% | #27 |
| Nevada | 8.24% | 0.50% | #43 |
| New Hampshire | 0.00% | 1.50% | #5 |
| South Dakota | 6.11% | 1.00% | #18 |
| Tennessee | 9.61% | 0.52% | #41 |
| Texas | 8.20% | 1.40% | #7 |
| Wyoming | 5.39% | 0.53% | #40 |
