How it works
Enter your current state, your destination, filing status, income, and two numbers only you know: how much you spend each year on goods subject to sales tax, and the value of the home you would own. For each state the tool adds three taxes: state income tax from the Tax Foundation 2026 brackets, sales tax at the state’s average combined rate applied to your spending, and property tax at the state’s effective rate applied to your home value. The difference is your estimated yearly change in take-home pay from state taxes.
Not included: federal tax (identical in any state), local income taxes, cost-of-living differences, exemptions on groceries and other goods, vehicle, gas, excise and utility taxes, and state-specific credits. Your spending figure should only include purchases that are actually taxable. Estimates for movers who keep a job in the same pay band; remote workers who still work in another state may owe that state’s tax.

Frequently asked questions
Will I take home more money if I move to a state with no income tax?
You avoid state income tax, but you may pay more in sales or property tax. Tennessee, for example, has no income tax but a 9.61% average combined sales tax. Run both states through the comparator with your own spending and home value.
What does this comparator include?
State income tax from 2026 brackets, sales tax at the state average combined rate on the taxable spending you enter, and property tax at the state effective rate on the home value you enter.
Does it include federal taxes?
No. Federal income tax rules are the same in every state, so they do not change the difference between two states. Use the federal income tax calculator for that.
How much of my spending is subject to sales tax?
That varies by state and by what you buy, because many states exempt groceries, prescriptions and some services while taxing others. The tool does not guess a share; you enter your own taxable spending.
What if I work remotely for an employer in another state?
Your income may be taxed by the state where you work or where the employer is located in addition to your home state, depending on the rules of each state. Check both state revenue departments.
Is my information stored?
No. The comparison runs entirely in your browser and nothing you enter is sent anywhere.
