How it works

Choose a state and an amount. The tool multiplies the amount by the state rate, the average local rate and the combined rate published by the Tax Foundation. The combined rate is a population-weighted average of local rates, so your city or county may be higher or lower, up to the maximum local rate shown. Many states exempt groceries, prescriptions or clothing, so the real tax on a basket of purchases is usually lower than the headline rate.

Five states have no statewide sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon. Only Alaska lets localities add their own. Alaska’s combined rate below is therefore local only.

Frequently asked questions

Which state has the highest sales tax in 2026?

Louisiana has the highest average combined state and local sales tax at 10.13%, followed by Tennessee (9.61%), Washington (9.57%), Arkansas (9.48%) and Alabama (9.46%), according to the Tax Foundation midyear 2026 data.

Which states have no sales tax?

Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no statewide sales tax. Alaska allows local sales taxes, which average 1.82%.

What is the combined sales tax rate?

It is the state rate plus the average local rate in that state, weighted by population. Your actual rate depends on your city and county, and can be as high as the maximum local rate shown in the table.

What is the highest state-level sales tax rate?

California has the highest state-level rate at 7.25%. Indiana, Mississippi, Rhode Island and Tennessee follow at 7%. Colorado has the lowest non-zero state rate at 2.9%.

Does sales tax apply to groceries and clothing?

It depends on the state. Many states exempt groceries, prescription drugs or clothing in whole or in part. This tool applies the headline rate to the whole amount, so treat it as an upper-end estimate for mixed purchases.

Where do these rates come from and how current are they?

They are the Tax Foundation 2026 midyear update: state rates as of January 1, 2026 and local rates as of July 1, 2026. Rates can change; verify at your state revenue department before filing.
