New York attorney search and registration number.
To verify a lawyer in New York, use the Court System’s Attorney Search. New York works differently from most states: there is no bar number, and good standing and discipline come from the Appellate Division.
Use the official register for the answer: the New York State Unified Court System record is authoritative, and this page cannot confirm anyone’s licence or standing. Open the register below, compare the details with the person who contacted you, and confirm with the regulator if anything does not match.
How the NY register is searched and what it shows
How the register is searched:
- Attorney Search finds attorneys by name. The Court System describes it as a free public service.
What the regulator says it shows:
- The Court System says it shows an attorney’s registered office, date of admission to the bar and law school.

The attorney registration number in New York
The Court System’s FAQ “What is my New York Bar number?” explains that New York does not issue bar numbers. The attorney registration number is used for court record-keeping and is also available in the Attorney Directory. Do not expect a “bar number” search to exist.
Where to find discipline records
The Court System’s Ask a Law Librarian page says that for good standing and disciplinary records you should contact the Grievance Committee for the Appellate Division that certified the lawyer to practice.
Limits to keep in mind
- A name match shows registration, not good standing; ask the Appellate Division grievance committee for that.
- Registration is renewed every two years, so a record reflects the last filing.
This page does not validate a number’s format or check a number against any list; only the official register can do that.
