How the bill is worked out

GOV.UK: multiply your rateable value by your multiplier. For 2026/27 in England there are five multipliers: small business 43.2p (rateable value below £51,000), standard 48.0p (£51,000 to £499,999), small business retail, hospitality and leisure (RHL) 38.2p, standard RHL 43.0p, and high-value 50.8p for rateable values of £500,000 and above. The RHL multipliers are set 5p below the national ones for qualifying properties below £500,000. From 1 April 2026 a 1p Transitional Relief Supplement is added for ratepayers who do not receive Transitional Relief, before reliefs apply.

Rateable valueOther usesRetail, hospitality, leisure
Below £51,00043.2p38.2p
£51,000 to £499,99948.0p43.0p
£500,000 and above50.8p50.8p

Worked example. A shop with a £30,000 rateable value that does not qualify as RHL: £30,000 x 43.2p = £12,960, plus 1p supplement £300 = £13,260 a year, before reliefs.

This covers England only. Wales and Scotland set their own multipliers. It does not model Transitional Relief, Supporting Small Business relief or charitable relief.
