How the bands work
Every home is placed in a valuation band, and the bill for each band is a fixed fraction of the Band D charge that the council sets. In England there are eight bands, A to H, based on 1 April 1991 values.
England and Wales: the proportions 6:7:8:9:11:13:15:18 are set by section 5 of the Local Government Finance Act 1992, with Wales adding band I at 21. Scotland: section 74 sets 240:280:320:360:473:585:705:882 from 1 April 2017.
England bands (1 April 1991 values)
| Band | Property value (1 April 1991) | Share of Band D |
|---|---|---|
| A | Up to £40,000 | 6/9 |
| B | £40,001 to £52,000 | 7/9 |
| C | £52,001 to £68,000 | 8/9 |
| D | £68,001 to £88,000 | 9/9 |
| E | £88,001 to £120,000 | 11/9 |
| F | £120,001 to £160,000 | 13/9 |
| G | £160,001 to £320,000 | 15/9 |
| H | Over £320,000 | 18/9 |
Worked example. Band D is £2,000. Band C is 8/9 of that, £1,777.78. Band E is 11/9, £2,444.44. In Scotland with the same Band D, Band E is 473/360, £2,627.78, and Band A is 240/360, £1,333.33.
Frequently asked questions
How do I work out my council tax from the Band D charge?
Multiply the Band D charge by your band’s share of Band D. In England every band is a fraction of 9/9: A is 6/9, B 7/9, C 8/9, D 9/9, E 11/9, F 13/9, G 15/9 and H 18/9. With a Band D charge of £2,000, a Band A property is £1,333.33 and a Band H property is £4,000.
Are the ratios the same in England, Wales and Scotland?
No. England uses 6:7:8:9:11:13:15:18 for bands A to H. Wales uses the same first eight plus a ninth band, I, at 21/9. Scotland uses 240:280:320:360:473:585:705:882 over 360 since 1 April 2017.
Where do I find the Band D figure for my council?
Each council publishes its Band D charge on its council tax charges page each year. This tool does not store per-council amounts because they change every April; it applies the national band ratios to the figure you enter.
Does the result include discounts or premiums?
No. It is the standard annual charge for the band, before the single person discount, exemptions, council tax reduction, or any premium on an empty or second home.
