Reading the IFTA rate matrix

Each row is one member jurisdiction. U.S. states are priced in US$ per US gallon and Canadian provinces in C$ per litre; IFTA converts each to the other unit using the exchange rate it publishes for the quarter (this quarter 1 CAD = 0.7131 USD, 1 USD = 1.4023 CAD). The diesel column is the matrix’s “Special Diesel” column. Kentucky and Virginia list a separate surcharge that is added to the base rate: Kentucky gasoline $0.2500 + $0.0450 and diesel $0.2200 + $0.1050; Virginia gasoline $0.3260 + $0.1530 and diesel $0.3360 + $0.1430. Indiana’s gasoline $0.3700 is the rate stated in the matrix footnote for Indiana. Oregon shows no gasoline or diesel rate in the matrix.

The matrix also carries rates for propane, LNG, CNG, ethanol blends, biodiesel and other fuels, and footnotes for each jurisdiction. This page shows gasoline and diesel only; open the official matrix for the rest.

How IFTA rates are used

Your tax in a jurisdiction is the net taxable gallons there times that jurisdiction’s rate. Use the IFTA fuel tax calculator to do the arithmetic. Rates move every quarter, so always use the rate for the quarter you are reporting.

Frequently asked questions

What are the IFTA tax rates by state?

The table above lists the 4th quarter 2026 gasoline and diesel rate for every IFTA jurisdiction. Texas diesel is $0.2000 per gallon, Ohio $0.4700, Pennsylvania $0.7410 and California $0.9790.

How often do IFTA rates change?

Every quarter. IFTA publishes a new matrix before each quarter and marks it final on a stated date; the Q4 2026 matrix is not final until 4 December 2026.

Why is a rate missing for California gasoline or Oregon?

The IFTA matrix prints no rate in those cells. This page repeats what the matrix shows rather than guessing; check with the jurisdiction if you run that fuel there.

Are the Canadian rates per litre or per gallon?

Canadian provinces set tax per litre. The matrix shows both the per-litre figure and the US$ per gallon equivalent at its published exchange rate. This page shows both.

Is this the official source?

No. The source is the IFTA, Inc. matrix, linked below, which should be treated as the reference. IFTA, Inc. itself says it does not verify the rates reported by member jurisdictions.
