How Canadian IFTA rates work
A carrier based in a Canadian province files its IFTA return with that province, and the standard return allows distance in miles or kilometres (Procedures Manual P720). The matrix prints each rate in both units so the same rate can be applied on either return; the U.S. equivalent shown here is derived by IFTA from the per-litre rate using the exchange rate it publishes for the quarter (the matrix’s P1020 note: the U.S. Federal Reserve index rate at noon Eastern on the third Monday of the month before the quarter).
The quick calculator multiplies net taxable litres (taxable litres minus tax-paid litres in that province) by the province’s rate. For the full multi-jurisdiction workflow in gallons and miles use the IFTA fuel tax calculator, which includes the provinces.
These are the IFTA-reported rates only. They are not provincial fuel tax rates for ordinary road-fuel purchases and they do not include federal or sales taxes.
