Writing Length and Speech Planners
Application essay character limit tracker.
Paste a draft to see characters or words used against a limit, how many are left, or how far over you are. Use the UCAS preset or type any limit from your own form. Your text stays in this browser tab: nothing is sent or stored.
Worked example
A draft with 3,200 characters against a limit of 4,000 uses 80.0% and leaves 800. A draft with 4,150 characters is 150 over. A 650 word draft against a 650 word limit has 0 left; the 651st word puts you 1 over.
How it works
Remaining = limit - used. Characters counts every character you type, including spaces and line breaks, as Unicode characters (an emoji counts as one). Words are runs of text separated by spaces or line breaks. Different forms count line breaks and spaces differently, so treat the figure as a guide and confirm in the real form before you submit.
Your own form decides how it counts characters, spaces and line breaks, and may differ from this tool. Check the limit on the official page for your application before relying on any preset.
Sources and basis (opened 2026-10-08): UCAS, “Writing your personal statement”. UCAS page says it explains how to make the most of the 4,000 characters of the personal statement. No other application limits are preset because none were verified at publication; type the limit from your own form.
