Words to pages, and back.
Pick your font, size, spacing and margins and get an estimated page count for a word count, or the words that fill a set number of pages. It is an estimate shown as a range. Nothing leaves this page.

Estimate
How the estimate is made
Worked example: 1,500 words in 12 pt Times New Roman, double spaced, 1-inch margins on US Letter. The text is 6.5 in wide (39 times the font size), which fits about 15 words per line; the 9-inch text height holds 23 double-spaced lines, so a page holds about 350 words and 1,500 words come to roughly 4.1 to 4.4 pages.
- Words per line: text width divided by the average width of a word plus its space, minus the words lost to ragged line ends and short last lines of paragraphs.
- Lines per page: text height divided by (font size × the font's own line height × spacing), rounded down.
- Where the constants come from: measured on 2026-09-30, not recalled. Glyph widths were read from the Times New Roman, Arial, Georgia, Verdana and Courier New font files over the full text of three public-domain books from Project Gutenberg: Pride and Prejudice, Moby-Dick and Frankenstein. Line height is (ascender − descender + line gap) divided by units per em from each font's table. The low and high ends of the range are the lowest and highest of the three books.
- Paper: US Letter is 8.5 x 11 in; A4 is 210 x 297 mm (ISO 216).
- Why it is only an estimate: headings, title blocks, indents, block quotes, lists, tables and images take space, and word processors differ slightly in line height. Widely quoted "250 to 300 words per page" figures for double-spaced 12 pt are rules of thumb that include those effects; this calculator measures continuous prose only, so expect real documents to land below its numbers. Your own word processor's count is final.
Words to pages FAQ
How many words is one page?
It depends on the font, size, line spacing and margins. With 12 pt Times New Roman, double spacing and 1-inch margins on US Letter, this calculator estimates about 345 to 360 words per page of continuous prose; titles, headings, quotes, lists and images lower the real count.
Why does it show a range instead of one number?
Word length, paragraph length and dialogue change where lines wrap. The range reflects measurements across three public-domain books and is an estimate, not a formatting rule.
How were the numbers worked out?
Word widths were measured from font files over Pride and Prejudice, Moby-Dick and Frankenstein. Line height comes from each font's metrics, and the method is documented on this page.
Does my page count in Word or Google Docs match?
It should be close for the listed fonts but not exact because word processors use slightly different line heights and may substitute fonts. Use the real document when a page limit is strict.
Is a word counted the same way as in the Word Count Checker?
Yes. A word is a run of characters between spaces or line breaks. Use the Word Count Checker for the exact count, then enter that number here.
Is my data uploaded?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser.
