How New Brunswick’s rent cap works
Landlords are not permitted to increase rent by more than 3% every 12 months. Rent can only be increased once every 12 months and not within the first 12 months of a tenancy, and landlords must give six months’ written notice.
A landlord must apply for permission to serve a notice of rent increase above the 3% cap, up to 9%, for justified capital expenditures for renovations. The 9% line in this tool is the ceiling of that process, not an entitlement: an increase above 3% is only valid if approved. The government has said the 3% cap stays in place for 2027, with a further review scheduled; this tool applies the rule as currently published on gnb.ca.
