What decides parcel versus freight
The hard line is the per-package maximum. USPS accepts up to 70 lb; UPS and FedEx accept up to 150 lb, with length and length + girth caps (UPS 108 in and 165 in; FedEx Ground and Home Delivery 108 in and 165 in; FedEx 119 in and 165 in under its Terms). A piece over those limits is not a parcel: UPS applies an Over Maximum Limits charge, and FedEx Ground treats it as unauthorized, which may be refused, returned or disposed of. FedEx also says a package over 150 lb entered for a FedEx Express service may be audited and corrected to FedEx Express Freight service.
Total weight is not the limit. UPS states there is no limit on the total weight of a shipment or the number of packages, so thirty 100 lb cartons can still ride a parcel network; whether they should is a cost question.
Where this guide stops
No carrier source used here names a weight at which LTL becomes cheaper than parcel, and the crossover depends on zone, density, accessorials and your contract. This tool therefore reports only whether a piece fits the published parcel limits. Once it does not, classify it with the LTL freight class calculator, estimate extras with the LTL accessorial estimator, and compare real quotes. Surcharge triggers such as UPS Large Package (over 110 lb or 130 in) and FedEx Oversize start well below these maximums.

FAQ
How heavy can a package be before it has to ship LTL?
UPS and FedEx parcel services accept up to 150 pounds per package and USPS up to 70 pounds. Above that a piece is outside the parcel network and needs freight or a carrier freight service.
Is there a limit on total shipment weight for UPS parcel?
UPS states there are no limits to the total weight of a shipment or the number of packages; the limits apply to each individual package.
What happens if I ship a 200 lb box with FedEx Ground?
FedEx Ground and Home Delivery packages over 150 pounds are unauthorized. FedEx may refuse, return or dispose of them, or accept them at its discretion and charge $1,875 per package on the 2026 list.
When is LTL cheaper than parcel?
No carrier publishes a single crossover. It depends on weight, density, distance and accessorials, so compare quotes for both modes.
