How girth and length plus girth are measured
Length is the longest side. Girth is the distance around the package at its thickest part, which for a box is 2 x (the other two sides). Length plus girth is length + 2 x second side + 2 x third side. FedEx states the same formula as length plus (two times the height) plus (two times the width).
Example: a 60 x 20 x 15 in box has girth 2 x (20 + 15) = 70 in and length plus girth 130 in, exactly at the UPS Large Package and FedEx Oversize line. 130.01 in is over it; 130 is not.
Length-plus-girth thresholds this tool checks
| Threshold | What happens above it | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 105 in | FedEx Additional Handling Surcharge (dimension) | FedEx Service Guide p. 127 |
| 108 in | Maximum for most USPS mail (DMM 201 section 7.3.2) | USPS DMM 201 |
| 130 in | UPS Large Package; FedEx Oversize; USPS Ground Advantage Commercial maximum | UPS page; FedEx Service Guide p. 128; USPS DMM 201 |
| 165 in | UPS Over Maximum Limits; FedEx unauthorized package | UPS page; FedEx Service Guide p. 128 |
| 3 m (118.11 in) | Canada Post out-of-spec parcel | Canada Post size and weight page |
The USPS 108 in rule has exceptions: USPS Ground Advantage Commercial, Parcel Select Destination Entry and USPS Connect Local parcels may measure up to 130 in length and girth. Rounding: the FedEx Terms round any fraction of an inch up to the next inch when measuring length and girth. The UPS and USPS pages used here do not restate a rounding rule, so the box above is optional.

FAQ
How do you calculate package girth?
Take the two shorter sides and add them together, then double the result: girth = 2 x (width + height) when length is the longest side. Length plus girth adds the longest side back.
What is the maximum length plus girth for UPS and FedEx?
Both state 165 inches. UPS also lists 108 inches maximum length and 150 pounds; FedEx Ground lists 108 inches length and 150 pounds. Over those limits UPS applies an Over Maximum Limits charge and FedEx an unauthorized package charge.
Is 130 inches length plus girth over the limit?
It is not over a threshold stated as "greater than 130 inches". UPS says a package is a Large Package when length plus girth exceeds 130 inches, and FedEx applies Oversize when it measures greater than 130 inches, so exactly 130 does not trigger either.
Does USPS use the same girth rule?
Yes for the formula: length is the longest side and girth is the distance around the thickest part. The limit is 108 inches for most USPS mail and 130 inches for USPS Ground Advantage Commercial parcels.
