Inputs

Presets fill example values you should change. They are naming suggestions, not platform requirements.
Who sends the traffic: google, newsletter4, billboard.
The marketing medium: cpc, banner, email.
The campaign name, slogan or promo code.
Paid search keyword, if you tag keywords by hand.
Tells apart links in the same ad or email.
Separate with spaces or commas. A medium outside this list gets a warning. Clear it to turn the check off.

Enter a URL and the three required tags, then press Build link.

How campaign URL tags work

A UTM link is your normal URL plus a query string. Google Analytics Help lists three required parameters: utm_source (who sends the traffic), utm_medium (the marketing medium) and utm_campaign (the campaign name, slogan or promo code). utm_term (paid search keyword) and utm_content (to tell apart links in the same ad or email) are optional. utm_ is just the required prefix.

Worked example. Linking https://www.example.com/ from a summer newsletter, with source summer-mailer, medium email and campaign summer-sale, gives https://www.example.com/?utm_source=summer-mailer&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=summer-sale. That is the example in Google's own help page, and this tool produces it exactly. A #fragment stays at the end and any query string already on the URL is kept.

Why the checks matter. Google states that Analytics is case sensitive, so utm_source=google and utm_source=Google are different values. Spaces turn into %20, which is hard to read in reports. The warnings here (capitals, spaces, odd characters, a medium outside your allowed list) are naming conventions this tool applies for consistency. They are not rules published by Google, and the default medium list is only a starting point you should replace with your own.

Tags on links that point to your own pages are for traffic you place elsewhere (email, ads, social posts, print). Do not tag internal links on your own site, because that starts a new session and hides the real source.

Frequently asked

Are all five parameters needed?

No. Source, medium and campaign are required; term and content are optional.

Does Google Ads need these tags?

This tool does not make a claim either way. The Google Ads preset is for links you tag by hand; check Google Ads Help for how your account handles tagging.

Is my history uploaded?

No. Links are built in your browser and the history is kept in local storage on this device until you clear it.

Scope of this builder

This tool only assembles and checks a URL. It does not confirm that a campaign exists in any ad platform or that your analytics property will record it.
