How the open graph checker works
The tool collects every <meta property="og:..."> tag (and the article:, book:, profile:, music: and video: families) and checks them against the Open Graph protocol at ogp.me. It does not fetch the image or any URL.
Worked example
Click Load example. It sets og:type to product (not a type on ogp.me), uses a relative og:image with no og:image:alt, and writes the URL as name="og:url" instead of property, so og:url counts as missing. Result: one fix for og:url and reviews for the type, image URL, alt text and attribute name.
What is checked
- The four required properties:
og:title,og:type,og:image,og:url. og:typeis one of the protocol's types (website, article, book, profile, music.*, video.*) or a prefixed custom type.og:imageis an absolute http(s) URL; width and height are whole numbers;og:image:secure_urlis https. The spec callsog:image:altrequired with an image.og:urlis absolute, has no fragment and matchesrel=canonical.og:localelooks likeen_US;og:determineris a valid value.- No repeated tags unless the property is repeatable (images, videos, audio, alternate locales, article tags).
The protocol does not explicitly require absolute URLs for every property; its examples use full URLs, so the absolute-URL checks here are a conservative rule of this tool. Platforms add their own rules, such as Twitter/X card tags, so use the Social Preview Checker for those.
