LEGO display shelf calculator.
Enter the usable inside size of the shelf and the width, depth and height of what you want to put on it, and the calculator counts how many fit side by side, how many rows deep and how many in total. It tries the item turned 90 degrees and can check weight against a shelf rating. Example: LEGO Jazz Club (10312) boxes are 57.8 × 47.6 × 12 cm; stood spine-out on an 80 cm wide, 50 cm deep shelf, 6 fit, using 72 cm of the width.

How the shelf count is calculated
Items side by side: floor((shelf width + gap) / (item width + gap)). Rows deep, if you fill the depth: floor((shelf depth + gap) / (item depth + gap)); otherwise one row. An item only fits when its height is within the clear height of the level and its footprint is inside the shelf. The calculator tries the item both ways round and keeps the layout that fits more. Total capacity is the count per level times the number of levels. This is plain packing arithmetic on the numbers you enter: no source sets how many sets a shelf holds, because it depends entirely on the sets and the shelf.
If you give a weight per item and a rated load per shelf, it divides one by the other and tells you when the weight limit, not the space, sets the number.
Worked examples with real numbers
- Boxes spine-out. Brickset lists the Jazz Club (10312) box at 57.8 × 47.6 × 12 cm and 3.88 kg. Stood on the 12 cm edge on a shelf 80 cm wide, 50 cm deep and 60 cm clear: 80 / 12 = 6.67, so 6 boxes, using 72 cm and leaving 8 cm. Six boxes weigh 23.3 kg.
- The same boxes flat. Laid flat, one box takes 57.8 × 47.6 cm of an 80 × 50 cm shelf, so one per level, 12 cm high.
- Weight beating space. IKEA lists its BLALIDEN glass-door cabinet at 13¾ × 12⅝ × 59½ in outside with a maximum load of 7 lb per shelf. One Jazz Club box is 3.88 kg, 8.6 lb, so even one box is over that rating. The calculator reports 0 by weight there. Outer size is also not usable size: the glass and frame take part of the 13¾ in.
- A forum benchmark. A 2014 Eurobricks poster said an IKEA display shelf unit with 6 shelves was “holding three full LotR/Hobbit waves comfortably which was about 15-20 sets.” That is roughly 3 sets per shelf, for that poster's mix of sets; a single large set can fill a shelf alone.
Where to find the sizes
Brickset's set pages list “Model size”, “Packaging size” and weight for many sets. It does not label the order of the three model dimensions, so measure the built model yourself or check which number is the height before you enter it. The packaging size ends in the box thickness, as in 57.8 × 47.6 × 12 cm for Jazz Club. Shelf makers list outside dimensions; measure inside before you trust a count.
What this calculator leaves out
It treats each item as a box. Display builds with overhangs, minifigure stands, protective cases, lighting and the extra height of a stacked second row are not modelled. It does not check that a shelf is strong enough over a long span, only the load rating you type in.
Common mix-ups

Often assumedA cabinet's listed size is the room you have for sets.
What the source saysIKEA lists BLALIDEN at 13¾ × 12⅝ × 59½ in as outside measurements, and rates each shelf at 7 lb maximum. Frame and glass take space, and a heavy box can exceed the load rating before it runs out of room. [1]

Often assumedA big LEGO box is no heavier than a small stack of books.
What the source saysBrickset lists the Jazz Club (10312) box at 3.88 kg (8.56 lb) with a 57.8 × 47.6 × 12 cm package, already above a 7 lb per-shelf rating on its own. [2] [1]

Often assumedThere is a standard number of sets that fit on a shelf.
What the source saysThe only figure in the Eurobricks thread is one poster's experience: a 6-shelf IKEA unit holding about 15 to 20 sets, for that poster's sets. It is not a rule. [3]

Frequently asked questions
How many LEGO sets fit on a shelf?
It depends on the sets and the shelf, so the calculator counts it from your numbers. As a real data point, one 2014 Eurobricks poster described a 6-shelf IKEA unit holding about 15 to 20 sets. Boxes stood on their 12 cm thickness, like Jazz Club, fit 6 on an 80 cm shelf.
Should I measure the box or the built set?
Whichever you are putting on the shelf. Many collectors keep both. The box size is the package size Brickset lists (for Jazz Club, 57.8 x 47.6 x 12 cm); the built size you measure yourself or read from the set listing, checking which of its three numbers is the height.
Why is there a gap setting?
A set sitting against its neighbours is hard to lift out and collects dust in the seams. The gap is added between items, not at the ends. Set it to 0 to see the tightest fit.
Does it check the shelf can take the weight?
Only against a rated load you enter. IKEA, for example, lists 7 lb per shelf for its BLALIDEN cabinet; a single 3.88 kg Jazz Club box is already over that, so the calculator would report 0 by weight.
What does turning the item mean?
The calculator also tries swapping the item's width and depth and keeps whichever layout fits more. Turning a deep, narrow box often fits more across a wide shelf.
Can I stack boxes?
Treat the stack as one item: enter double the height with the same footprint, then multiply the count by two. Check the shelf rating, because a stack doubles the weight on that spot.
