Worked example
R30 000.00 a month is R360 000.00 a year. On the SARS table that falls in the 26% bracket: R44 118.00 + 26% × (R360 000.00 − R245 100.00) = R73 992.00. Less the primary rebate of R17 820.00 gives R56 172.00 a year, or R4 681.00 a month. UIF is 1% = R177.12 (the ceiling is R17 712 a month), so take-home is about R25 141.88. Two medical scheme members would cut annual tax by R9 024.00.

Limits of this estimate
The tool annualises a regular monthly amount (monthly × 12), taxes it, and divides by 12. It is an estimate, not SARS’s own PAYE method: it does not model bonuses or irregular pay, retirement-fund and other deductions that reduce taxable income, fringe benefits, additional medical expenses credits, or employer-side costs. Use your payslip, your employer’s payroll or SARS’s own tools for exact figures.

FAQ
What is the tax-free threshold in South Africa for 2026/27?
R99 000 a year for people under 65, R153 250 for 65 to 74, and R171 300 for 75 and older, from the SARS 2027 tax year table.
How is PAYE calculated?
Monthly pay is annualised, tax is read from the SARS brackets, the age-based rebates and medical scheme fees tax credit are subtracted, and the result is divided by 12. This tool uses that approach as an estimate.
What is the top tax rate?
45% on taxable income above R1 878 600 for the 2027 tax year.
Is UIF deducted from my pay?
Yes, 1% of remuneration up to R17 712 a month, so at most R177.12, and your employer pays a matching 1%.
