Puzzle board size calculator.
Choose a piece count and finished size, set the margin you want around the puzzle, and the calculator gives the smallest board that holds it, then checks it against Galison's table-space guidance and your own board. Example: Buffalo Games' large-format 1500-piece puzzle finishes at 38.5 × 26.5 in, so with a 1 in margin all round it needs a 40.5 × 28.5 in board, which is 0.5 in longer than the 30 × 40 in Galison recommends for 1500 to 2000 pieces.

How the board size is worked out
The minimum board is the finished width and depth plus the margin on every side: width + 2 × margin by depth + 2 × margin. The page then compares that with Galison's table-space chart, which pairs experience levels with surfaces: 18 × 12 in for 100 to 300 pieces, 24 × 20 in for 300 to 500, 24 × 36 in for 500 to 1000 and 30 × 40 in for 1000 and up. It uses the tier for your piece count (at exactly 300, 500 or 1000 pieces, the smaller tier). If you enter your own board, it checks whether the puzzle plus margin fits, turning the board if needed.
A board sized for the finished puzzle will not hold every loose piece at once. For that, see the table size calculator, which uses the square-root-of-3 rule from a published paper.
Worked examples with real numbers
- Buffalo Games, 1500 pieces, large format. The maker lists 38.5 × 26.5 in. With a 1 in margin that is 40.5 × 28.5 in. Galison's 30 × 40 in tier for 1500 to 2000 pieces is 0.5 in short on the long side.
- Buffalo Games, 1500 pieces, smaller format. The same maker lists 31.5 × 23.5 in for other 1500-piece puzzles. With a 1 in margin that is 33.5 × 25.5 in, which fits inside 30 × 40 in.
- Galison, 1000 pieces. Listed at 27 × 20 in; with a 1 in margin, 29 × 22 in, which fits inside the 24 × 36 in tier (29 is under 36 and 22 is under 24). The page checks both ways round.
- A 24 × 36 in board for 1000 pieces from White Mountain. White Mountain lists 30 × 24 in. With a 1 in margin that is 32 × 26 in, and 26 in is deeper than the 24 in side. A board that suits one maker's 1000-piece puzzle can be too small for another's.
Finished area per piece, from the maker's own sizes
| Puzzle | Finished size (in) | Area (sq in) | Sq in per piece |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buffalo Games 300 | 21.25 × 15 | 318.8 | 1.06 |
| Buffalo Games 500 | 21.25 × 15 | 318.8 | 0.64 |
| Buffalo Games 750 | 24 × 18 | 432.0 | 0.58 |
| Buffalo Games 1000 | 26.75 × 19.75 | 528.3 | 0.53 |
| Buffalo Games 1500 (smaller) | 31.5 × 23.5 | 740.3 | 0.49 |
| Buffalo Games 1500 (larger) | 38.5 × 26.5 | 1,020.3 | 0.68 |
| Buffalo Games 2000 | 38.5 × 26.5 | 1,020.3 | 0.51 |
| White Mountain 1000 | 30 × 24 | 720.0 | 0.72 |
| Galison 1000 | 27 × 20 | 540.0 | 0.54 |
The same piece count spans 0.49 to 0.68 sq in per piece in the table above, so piece count alone does not fix the size.
What this calculator leaves out
It sizes a flat board for the assembled picture. It does not include sorting trays, drawers, a lid, a stand or the edge of a folding table, and it does not know which boards are sold in your area. Galison's chart is one maker's guidance for its own puzzles, not a standard. Check the usable surface of any board you plan to buy, which can be smaller than its outer size.
Common mix-ups
-
Often assumedA piece count tells you the finished size.
What the source saysBuffalo Games lists 300-piece and 500-piece puzzles at the same 21.25 × 15 in, and 1500-piece puzzles at both 31.5 × 23.5 in and 38.5 × 26.5 in. The 38.5 × 26.5 in size is also what it lists for 2000 pieces. [1]
-
Often assumedAll 1000-piece puzzles fit the same board.
What the source saysListed finished sizes for 1000 pieces are 26.75 × 19.75 in (Buffalo Games), 27 × 20 in (Galison) and 30 × 24 in (White Mountain), so the board you need differs by maker. [1] [2] [3]
-
Often assumedA board sized to the finished puzzle also holds all the loose pieces.
What the source saysGalison suggests a surface of at least 24 × 36 in for a 1000-piece puzzle, but laying out every piece flat takes about 1.73 times the finished area according to a 2023 paper, about 935 sq in for Galison's own 27 × 20 in size, against 864 sq in for 24 × 36 in. [4] [5]

Frequently asked questions
What size puzzle board do I need for a 1500-piece puzzle?
Galison recommends a table or board of at least 30 x 40 in for 1500 to 2000 pieces. Buffalo Games' 1500-piece puzzles finish at 31.5 x 23.5 in or 38.5 x 26.5 in, so with a 1 in margin the larger one (40.5 x 28.5 in) just overruns 40 in.
What size board for a 1000-piece puzzle?
Galison suggests at least 24 x 36 in. Finished 1000-piece puzzles are listed at 26.75 x 19.75 in, 27 x 20 in and 30 x 24 in by three makers, so a 24 x 36 in surface fits two of them with a small margin and is too narrow for White Mountain's 30 x 24 in plus margin.
How much margin should I leave?
The sources do not set one, so the calculator lets you choose. One inch (2.5 cm) each side leaves room to reach edge pieces; more helps if you assemble from the edges inward with trays alongside.
Does my board need to hold all the loose pieces too?
Not necessarily. Most puzzlers sort pieces into trays or boxes. If you want every piece out in a single layer, use the table size calculator, which gives the area for that.
Is the usable surface the same as the stated board size?
Not always. Folding boards, drawers and raised rims can shrink the usable area, so compare the usable surface, not the outer size, with the number this page gives.
Why do two puzzles with the same piece count differ in size?
Piece size varies with the cut. In the makers' listings, the same piece count spans about 0.49 to 0.68 square inches of finished area per piece.
