About this PDF page numbering tool
The tool draws a small number onto each page of your PDF, using Helvetica, a standard PDF font that needs no embedding of your own fonts. Your original page content is not rasterised or altered; the number is added on top as ordinary text.
Choices
- Position: any of six places, with a margin of about 28 points (0.4 inch) from the page edge.
- Format: a bare number,
Page 3,3 of 10,Page 3 of 10or- 3 -. The total in "of N" counts only the pages that are numbered. - First number: start at 1, or at another value, for example 5 when this PDF continues a longer document.
- Roman numerals: lowercase i, ii, iii for front matter such as a preface.
- Skipped pages: enter
1to leave a cover page unnumbered. Skipped pages do not use up a number, so page 2 of the file shows as 1 if the cover is skipped and you start at 1.
Limits
- Up to 40 MB and 500 pages. Password-protected PDFs stop with an error; remove the password first.
- Numbers are drawn at the page's visible bottom or top edge in the page's current orientation. A page with a custom rotation flag may place the number on a different physical edge.
- The number is dark grey and will not be readable on a dark full-page background.
The file is read and written in your browser. This page loads no advertising or analytics scripts.
FAQ
How do I add page numbers to a PDF without uploading it?
Choose the file above, set the position and format, and press Add page numbers. The numbered PDF is built on your device and offered as a download.
How do I start numbering from page 3 or leave the cover blank?
To leave the cover unnumbered type 1 in the skip box. To begin at a different number, change First number. Skipped pages do not consume a number.
Will this change my PDF's text or quality?
No. The original page content is kept and a number is added on top. The file is re-saved, so its size can change slightly.
