Case matters: Steve and steve give different UUIDs. Java names are 3 to 16 characters of letters, digits and underscores.

Why offline players have fixed UUIDs

When a Java Edition server runs with online-mode=false it cannot ask Mojang who a player is. It builds a UUID from the name instead: the MD5 hash of the text OfflinePlayer:<name>, with the version nibble set to 3 and the variant bits set to the RFC 4122 form. This is the same construction as Java’s UUID.nameUUIDFromBytes.

Because the input is only the name, the result never changes. It also means an offline-mode player’s UUID differs from the UUID of the same name’s Mojang account, so inventories and permissions tied to the offline UUID do not follow the player to an online-mode server.

Source: RFC 4122 for version 3 UUIDs and RFC 1321 for MD5; the OfflinePlayer prefix is the behaviour of the Java Edition server. This page does not look up real accounts.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as my real Minecraft UUID?

No. A real account has a random version 4 UUID issued by Mojang. This tool computes only the offline-mode value.

Why is the UUID different when I change capitalization?

The name is hashed exactly as typed, so each spelling gives its own UUID.

Does this work for Bedrock Edition?

No. This is the Java Edition server behaviour.

Offline mode only

Running a server in offline mode disables account authentication. Use it only on a network you control.
