How to calculate the cost per serving of a recipe

For each ingredient the cost used is the package price multiplied by the amount used, divided by the package size. Use the same unit for the package size and the amount used (grams, millilitres, eggs, whichever you like). Add the costs, then divide by the number of servings. Count only what you use, not the whole package, unless you will not use the rest. Leave unused rows blank.

Worked example. Flour at $12.98 for 1,000 g with 500 g used costs $6.49. Cheese at $3.49 for a 400 g block with all 400 g used costs $3.49. Spice at $2.00 for 10 portions with 1 used costs $0.20. The recipe totals $10.18, and 6 servings is $1.70 each.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the cost per serving?

Add up what each ingredient costs for the amount you use, then divide the total by the number of servings.

Do I count pantry staples like salt and oil?

Count them if you want the true cost. Enter the price of the bottle and the amount you use; small amounts cost cents.

Can I mix units across ingredients?

Yes, each row has its own unit. Within a row, the package size and the amount used must be the same unit.

Why does my total differ from my grocery receipt?

The tool counts only the part of each package the recipe uses. The receipt counts whole packages.
