How to find the cheapest protein
Multiply the servings per package by the grams of protein per serving to get the protein in the package. Divide the price by that number for the cost per gram. The inverse, grams per dollar, is easier to compare across products. This counts protein quantity only. It does not rate protein quality, calories, fibre, sodium or taste, and it uses the label values per serving as printed.
Worked example. A $24.99 tub with 30 servings at 24 g protein holds 720 g of protein. That is $0.0347 per gram, $0.69 per 20 g, $3.47 per 100 g, and 28.8 g of protein per dollar. A $8.50 pack with 10 servings at 25 g holds 250 g protein, which is $0.0340 per gram, so it is the lower cost per gram of the two.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the cost per gram of protein?
Divide the price by the total grams of protein in the package, which is servings per package times protein per serving.
Is the cheapest protein the best choice?
Not necessarily. This compares cost only, not calories, fat, sodium, fibre or how well the food suits you.
Where do I find protein per serving?
On the nutrition facts table. Use the serving size the table lists, and the servings per container.
Does it work for whole foods?
Yes. Use the package price, the number of servings on the label and the protein per serving.
