Cloud costs · Amazon S3

S3 storage class cost comparison.

Enter how much you store, how big the objects are and how often you read and write them. The table prices every S3 storage class with storage, requests, retrieval fees and the 128 KB minimum billable size.

For 1,000 GB in 512 KB objects with 1,000,000 reads, 100,000 writes and 100 GB retrieved a month in US East, S3 One Zone-IA is cheapest at $13.00 a month, against $23.90 for S3 Standard. If the data is never read (no GET requests, 10 GB restored a month) S3 Glacier Deep Archive (restore first) drops to $1.24.

Method and limits

What is priced. Per class: storage per GB-month (S3 Standard and Intelligent-Tiering Frequent Access use the volume tiers), PUT and GET request prices, retrieval fees per GB for Standard-IA, One Zone-IA, Glacier Instant Retrieval, Glacier Flexible Retrieval (standard retrieval) and Glacier Deep Archive (standard retrieval) with the 'restore first' rows, and the Intelligent-Tiering monitoring charge of $0.0000025 per object in US East.

Small objects. Standard-IA, One Zone-IA and Glacier Instant Retrieval bill each object as at least 128 KB. Intelligent-Tiering only monitors and tiers objects of 128 KB or more, so for smaller objects everything stays at Frequent Access rates with no monitoring charge.

Not included. Minimum storage durations (30 days for Standard-IA and One Zone-IA, 90 days for Glacier Instant and Flexible Retrieval, 180 days for Deep Archive), lifecycle transition requests, Glacier restore request fees, the 40 KB metadata added to each Glacier Flexible and Deep Archive object, the Intelligent-Tiering Archive tiers, data transfer and taxes. GET requests are not charged for the two archive classes because objects there are restored rather than read directly.

FAQ

What is the cheapest S3 storage class?

Per GB-month in US East, Glacier Deep Archive is cheapest at $0.00099, then Glacier Flexible Retrieval at $0.0036, Glacier Instant Retrieval at $0.004, One Zone-IA at $0.01, Standard-IA at $0.0125 and Standard at $0.023. The cheapest total depends on how often you read the data, which is what the table shows.

When is S3 Standard-IA cheaper than Standard?

When data is read rarely. IA storage is about half the price of Standard, but requests cost more and every GB retrieved costs $0.01, and objects under 128 KB are billed as 128 KB.

Is S3 Intelligent-Tiering worth it?

It avoids retrieval fees and moves unused objects to cheaper tiers automatically, but it adds a per-object monitoring fee and ignores objects under 128 KB. Set the Infrequent Access share above to see its price for your data.

Do the Glacier classes have minimum storage durations?

Yes: 90 days for Glacier Instant Retrieval and Flexible Retrieval, and 180 days for Deep Archive. Deleting earlier is still billed for the full period, which this table does not add.

Does this include data transfer out?

No. Use the S3 egress calculator for internet data transfer.
