Worked example

With a 256 × 256 master, 6 of the 7 sizes shrink it. Only the 512 × 512 web app icon would enlarge it to 200% of its size (2x), so a 512 px or larger master is better.

How it works

Google Search’s favicon guidelines (opened 8 October 2026) say a favicon must be square (1:1) and at least 8 × 8 px, and recommend one larger than 48 × 48 px. The web.dev guide to the web app manifest (opened 8 October 2026) says Chromium needs at least a 192 × 192 and a 512 × 512 icon, and that icons marked "purpose": "any maskable" act as adaptive icons on Android. MDN documents the same purpose values.

The 16, 32 and 180 px sizes are common conventions for browser tabs and the iOS home screen. Apple’s own documentation pages could not be read automatically for this tool, so check Apple’s current guidance before you submit an app. The 96 px row is an optional extra, not a requirement.
