Reverse GST and RST calculator, Manitoba.

Got a total with tax already in it? Enter it and get the price before tax and the GST and RST that was added.

In Manitoba the combined rate is 5% GST + 7% RST = 12%. To remove it, divide the total by 1.12. Example: $168.00 ÷ 1.12 = $150.00 before tax, so $18.00 of the total is tax.

How the reverse calculation works

Manitoba calls its provincial tax RST (retail sales tax); the CRA lists it as 7% PST. Either way, it is added to the 5% GST on the same selling price.

Pre-tax price = total ÷ 1.12. Tax = total − pre-tax price. Worked examples at the Manitoba rate:

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove GST and RST from a Manitoba total?

Divide the total by 1.12. That is 1 plus the combined rate of 12%. The result is the price before tax; subtract it from the total to get the tax. $168.00 ÷ 1.12 = $150.00, so the tax is $18.00.

Why can't I just take 12% off the total?

Because the rate applies to the pre-tax price, not to the total. Taking 12% of $168.00 gives $20.16, but the real tax is $18.00. Dividing by 1.12 is the correct reverse.

Is Manitoba RST charged on the GST?

No. Manitoba Finance says the tax "is calculated on the selling price, before the GST (Good and Services Tax) is applied". That is why the two taxes add up to 12% of the pre-tax price and the divisor is 1.12. The CRA calls the provincial tax PST in its table; Manitoba calls it RST.

Will the answer match my receipt to the cent?

Usually, but not always. A seller rounds the tax on its own invoice, sometimes line by line, and more than one pre-tax price can produce the same total once rounded. This tool rounds the pre-tax price to the nearest cent and makes the tax lines add back to your total. If the receipt prints the tax, trust the receipt.

Estimate only

This is arithmetic on the rate you choose. It does not know whether the items you bought were taxable, zero-rated, exempt or taxed at a different rate, and it does not look anything up from the CRA or any provincial register. Where a receipt prints its own tax lines, use those. Verify current rates with the CRA before invoicing.
