Reverse GST and QST calculator, Quebec.
Got a total with tax already in it? Enter it and get the price before tax and the GST and QST that was added.
In Quebec the combined rate is 5% GST + 9.975% QST = 14.975%. To remove it, divide the total by 1.14975. Example: $229.95 ÷ 1.14975 = $200.00 before tax, so $29.95 of the total is tax.

How the reverse calculation works
Quebec's 9.975% QST is administered by Revenu Québec, not the CRA, but the arithmetic is the same: one divisor, two tax lines.
Pre-tax price = total ÷ 1.14975. Tax = total − pre-tax price. Worked examples at the Quebec rate:
- $229.95 total = $200.00 before tax, $10.00 GST and $19.95 QST.
- $172.46 total = $150.00 before tax, $7.50 GST and $14.96 QST.

Frequently asked questions
How do I remove GST and QST from a Quebec total?
Divide the total by 1.14975. That is 1 plus the combined rate of 14.975%. The result is the price before tax; subtract it from the total to get the tax. $229.95 ÷ 1.14975 = $200.00, so the tax is $29.95.
Why can't I just take 14.975% off the total?
Because the rate applies to the pre-tax price, not to the total. Taking 14.975% of $229.95 gives $34.44, but the real tax is $29.95. Dividing by 1.14975 is the correct reverse.
Is QST charged on top of the GST in Quebec?
No. Revenu Québec describes the QST as 9.975% of the selling price excluding the GST, so the two taxes are added side by side: 5% + 9.975% = 14.975% of the pre-tax price, and the divisor is 1.14975.
Will the answer match my receipt to the cent?
Usually, but not always. A seller rounds the tax on its own invoice, sometimes line by line, and more than one pre-tax price can produce the same total once rounded. This tool rounds the pre-tax price to the nearest cent and makes the tax lines add back to your total. If the receipt prints the tax, trust the receipt.
Estimate only
This is arithmetic on the rate you choose. It does not know whether the items you bought were taxable, zero-rated, exempt or taxed at a different rate, and it does not look anything up from the CRA or any provincial register. Where a receipt prints its own tax lines, use those. Verify current rates with the CRA and Revenu Québec before invoicing.
