Reverse GST and PST calculator, British Columbia.
Got a total with tax already in it? Enter it and get the price before tax and the GST and PST that was added.
In British Columbia the combined rate is 5% GST + 7% PST = 12%. To remove it, divide the total by 1.12. Example: $224.00 ÷ 1.12 = $200.00 before tax, so $24.00 of the total is tax.

How the reverse calculation works
British Columbia charges 5% GST and 7% PST as two separate taxes, so a reverse calculation divides by 1.12, not by 1.05 and then 1.07.
Pre-tax price = total ÷ 1.12. Tax = total − pre-tax price. Worked examples at the British Columbia rate:
- $224.00 total = $200.00 before tax, $10.00 GST and $14.00 PST.
- $78.40 total = $70.00 before tax, $3.50 GST and $4.90 PST.
What this tool assumes
This tool treats GST (5%) and PST (7%) as two separate taxes on the same pre-tax price, with a combined divisor of 1.12. The CRA table shows them in separate columns; the BC page quoted above states the PST rate but we could not find a BC page that states the calculation base in words, so treat the 1.12 divisor as an assumption and check it against a receipt that prints both tax lines.

Frequently asked questions
How do I remove GST and PST from a British Columbia total?
Divide the total by 1.12. That is 1 plus the combined rate of 12%. The result is the price before tax; subtract it from the total to get the tax. $224.00 ÷ 1.12 = $200.00, so the tax is $24.00.
Why can't I just take 12% off the total?
Because the rate applies to the pre-tax price, not to the total. Taking 12% of $224.00 gives $26.88, but the real tax is $24.00. Dividing by 1.12 is the correct reverse.
Why does my BC receipt show only GST on some items?
The BC government says the 7% PST applies generally, "with some exceptions", so some items carry GST only. If a total has no PST in it, reverse it at 5% instead: choose Alberta (GST 5%) or enter a custom 5% rate. A mixed basket needs the receipt's own tax lines.
Will the answer match my receipt to the cent?
Usually, but not always. A seller rounds the tax on its own invoice, sometimes line by line, and more than one pre-tax price can produce the same total once rounded. This tool rounds the pre-tax price to the nearest cent and makes the tax lines add back to your total. If the receipt prints the tax, trust the receipt.
Estimate only
This is arithmetic on the rate you choose. It does not know whether the items you bought were taxable, zero-rated, exempt or taxed at a different rate, and it does not look anything up from the CRA or any provincial register. Where a receipt prints its own tax lines, use those. Verify current rates with the CRA before invoicing.
