How to check the framing of a Canadian passport photo

  1. Choose a JPG, PNG or WebP photo.
  2. Use Zoom and the move controls to place the face inside the 50 by 70 mm frame.
  3. Move the crown and chin guides to the top of the head and the bottom of the chin to measure face height against the 31 to 36 mm requirement.
  4. Create a reference crop if you want to discuss framing with your photographer.

What this does and does not do

Canada.ca asks for two identical, unaltered photos, 50 mm wide and 70 mm high, with a face measuring 31 to 36 mm from chin to crown, taken in person by a commercial photographer or studio against a plain white or light background. This page lets you measure the geometry that you set by hand. It uses no face detection and no artificial intelligence, so it cannot judge expression, lighting, sharpness, background or whether the photo is acceptable.

Do not submit the downloaded crop. It is a reference only, and the application needs the original photo from the studio. Use this tool to check that a studio proof appears to follow the proportions, or to prepare a conversation with the photographer.

Your photo stays on your device

The checker runs in your browser, inside an isolated frame on this page that has no network access. Your file is read and written back by your own device, so it is not uploaded to TNAADO or anyone else, and nothing is stored. The advertising on this page sits outside the frame and cannot see what you choose. A passport photo is personal data, and nothing here is uploaded or analysed by a server.

Current Canadian passport photo requirements

Canada.ca requires two identical, unaltered photos measuring 50 mm wide by 70 mm high. The face must measure 31–36 mm from chin to crown. The photo must be current, clear, sharp, evenly lit, straight-on, centred, neutral in expression, and taken against a plain white or light-coloured background by a commercial photographer or photo studio.

This page can measure only the geometry you set manually. It cannot determine identity, expression, focus, natural skin tone, glare, shadows, recency, professional printing, studio markings or whether an application will be accepted.

Frequently asked questions

Is the downloaded crop submission-ready?

No. It is a framing reference. Canada.ca says the submitted photo must be original and unaltered and must be taken in person by a commercial photographer or photo studio.

Does this use face recognition or upload my photo?

No. You place the crown and chin guides yourself. The photo is decoded and cropped only inside this browser tab.
