Law Society of BC lawyer lookup.
To verify a lawyer in British Columbia, use the Law Society of BC’s own Lawyer Directory. This page explains what it searches, what the results show, and what the Law Society says the results do not guarantee.
Use the official register for the answer: the Law Society of British Columbia’s own listing is the authoritative record, and this page cannot confirm anyone’s licence or standing. Open the register below, compare the details with the person who contacted you, and confirm with the regulator if anything does not match.
What the LSBC register shows and how to search it
What the regulator says its register shows:
- Names, contact information and current practice status of lawyers licensed in BC.
- Whether the lawyer has a discipline history, any restriction on practising in an area of law, and any current regulatory proceedings.
How the register is searched:
- Last name is required. The directory advises typing the last name only, in full or in part, for the best results.
- You can match the last name as “starts with”, “exact match” or “contains”.
- First name or first initial, and city, are optional.

Why check a lawyer in British Columbia before you hire or pay
Confirming that a person claiming to be a lawyer is on the regulator’s register is a basic step before paying a retainer or acting on a demand letter. Impersonation of lawyers is a known scam pattern, and a name or number that looks plausible tells you nothing; only the register is evidence.
Limits to keep in mind
- The Law Society says the information “may not be the most current information available” and that a lawyer’s status can change at any time; it suggests contacting Registration and Licensee Services to confirm.
- Discipline history before November 1983 does not appear, and results may not show all of a lawyer’s discipline history.
- The Law Society cannot provide referrals.
- The directory is for contacting lawyers professionally or verifying their status, not for commercial, marketing or fundraising purposes.

Frequently asked questions
How do I check whether someone is a lawyer in British Columbia?
Open the Law Society of BC Lawyer Directory, enter the last name (and optionally first name and city), and compare the listing with the person who contacted you. If you cannot find a match, contact the Law Society to confirm.
Does the BC directory show discipline history?
Yes. The Law Society says results show whether a lawyer has a discipline history, any restriction on practising in an area of law and any current regulatory proceedings. It also says history before November 1983 does not appear and not every disciplinary matter may be shown.
Can the Law Society of BC refer me to a lawyer?
No. The Lawyer Directory page states that, as the regulator of lawyers, the Law Society cannot provide referrals.
Is this page a lawyer verification tool?
No. It does not search anything and nothing you type here is transmitted. It only explains the official directory and links to it; the Law Society’s own result is the authoritative record.
