Alberta lawyer directory: find and check a lawyer.
The Law Society of Alberta publishes a Lawyer Directory you can search by name, firm, location, practice area and more. This page explains what a profile shows and the limits the Law Society puts on it, then sends you to the directory itself.
Use the official register for the answer: the Law Society of Alberta’s own listing is the authoritative record, and this page cannot confirm anyone’s licence or standing. Open the register below, compare the details with the person who contacted you, and confirm with the regulator if anything does not match.
What the LSA register shows and how to search it
What the regulator says its register shows:
- A lawyer’s name, business address, phone number, whether they are currently practising, and their enrolment year.
- Current citations, discipline history, notices and hearing reports.
How the register is searched:
- Name, firm, location (City/Town), practice areas, languages spoken, gender, and whether a lawyer offers limited scope retainers.
- Advanced search options include practising status (Practising, Non-Practising, Suspended or Former).

Why check a lawyer in Alberta before you hire or pay
Confirming that a person claiming to be a lawyer is on the regulator’s register is a basic step before paying a retainer or acting on a demand letter. Impersonation of lawyers is a known scam pattern, and a name or number that looks plausible tells you nothing; only the register is evidence.
Limits to keep in mind
- A profile displays discipline history dating back to 1 January 2015 only; for earlier records the Law Society directs you to its Regulation notices or to the Law Society.
- Not all lawyers publish contact information, for example those who are non-practising, suspended, disbarred, or in in-house or government roles.
- The Law Society does not recommend or endorse individual lawyers.
- The directory is for locating and contacting lawyers and verifying their status; the Law Society says any other use is strictly prohibited.
